Finally got around to watching this film tonight after hiring it from work for the 8th time.
After the finale of my teenage years I haven't been much of a fan of the typical American high-school drama scene, especially where music is involved. Let's face it, how many of us truly enjoy High-School Musical by our own will, having not been a victim of some peer pressure or youngling that forced the experience on us?
However, Pitch Perfect did give me a few giggles. I was highly anticipating Rebel Wilson's performance as I had watched a couple of interviews she gave (one I particularly enjoyed was on Ellen, [04/10/12] with a rendition of Salt-n-Pepa). She did not fail to amuse. I was a little touch-and-go with Anna Kendrick as her performance in Twilight was not enamouring, however she did pull off the alternative outsider pretty well.
On the whole the acting was reasonable but I enjoyed the film more for the music itself. My generation tends to get a little too hung up on pop, dubstep or RNB that has musical potential yet loses it in the repetitive loop, killing the originality and offering ammo to our elders in the argument that it is 'all trash'. I, for one, enjoyed the finale song of beginning with Jessie J's 'Price Tag', mixing in groovy Afro-beats, and topping it off with Simple Mind's 'Don't You Forget About Me'. I believe if more DJ's experimented between the musical eras instead of within them, there would be a hope of several generations enjoying both today's and yesterday's music.
If you're looking for something light-hearted, a little sassy and a no-brainer on a Friday night with your friends, significant other, or on your tod, Pitch Perfect is a recommendation on my list.
IMDB scoring 7.2/10
